Technical Details

Common technical details are:
shaft diameter @ top = 17mm
shaft diameter @ bottom = 10mm (Vasa & Elit), 7mm (Racing Elit)
handle length = 14cm
pick length = 10mm
shaft wall thickness = 1mm
handle overlays shaft = 84mm

Freelength kits include two shafts, two baskets, two handles, two straps and two identity stickers. The baskets are attached to the shafts already. A freelength shaft uncut after a handle is attached can result in a pole length of 182cm. To determine the cut point on a freelength shaft measure the desired length from the tip of the pick on the basket to the handle end of the shaft. Then subtract 74mm to obtain the cut point. Double check your measurement -- measure twice cut once!! Wrap masking tape at the cut point to easily indicate the cut point. Secure the shaft gently before starting to cut so it will not shift or roll. Cut the shaft with a very fine tooth saw. A new sharp saw blade will work best and easiest. Saw through the shaft with light pressure for each stroke so you will not splinter the material when the cut is almost complete.
Example: desire 165cm pole; 165cm - 7.4cm = 157.6cm.

Poles Selection and Handle Strap Sizing

  1. Select the style of pole that suits your needs. The pole styles are described above on this web page. Stiff, stronger poles are more efficient with the energy you expend poling.
  2. Select the pole length to match your size and the type of skiing you will doing with the pole. Consult the sizing chart for help.
  3. With poles that come with a racing strap choose the strap size that matches your hand size (L, M, S).
  4. Fit the strap to your hand. Loosen the locking plug and insert your hand into the strap. Secure the strap with the velcro strap. The velcro strap should hold the strap at the base of your palm's heel. Then tighten the main strap so the inside base of your thumb touches the handle. Now secure the main strap with the plug. Tap the plug in securely with a small hammer.
